E3: Funcom talks Age of Conan
[2008-07-16]

“Age of Conan’s launch was technically fantastic and server uptime was perfect”, said Erling Ellingson as we sat down to have a chat at E3 about how the game is coming along nearly two months after release. He seemed truly sincere in his claims stating again that he feels Age of Conan’s launch was one of the most successful launches ever for a mmorpg save for a few customer services issues that have since been remedied.

When asked what the development team has been focusing on lately Erling said that Funcom is hard at work in the fixing stage for Age of Conan and beginning work on the game’s first expansion – which he was extremely tight lipped about. Attention is focused on resolving the problems that have appeared since launch. Efforts to that end include improvements to City Sieges, which are showing a performance increase of over 300%, resolving other bugs, and continuing to develop the game’s features.

It’s no secret that Age of Conan launched without several key features; however change is on the horizon. Funcom is excited about the implementation of Dx10 which should be available for live preview at Leipzig in August. Erling was also excited to share news that the new PvP experience system should be in soon giving players an additional experience bar on their UI and the opportunity to gain ranks which unlock special items available for purchase from vendors.

There are several new features on their way to Hyboria. Players can expect several new indoor dungeons and outdoor regions such as Ymir’s Pass (level 55+) that will go a long way toward resolving the obvious thinning of content that players experience mid-game. Content is important to Funcom according to Erling because subscriber retention and attracting new players to the game are important. (Note: Erling said to be on the lookout for a Christmas edition of AoC!) As they continue in the fixing stage they are also very aware of the player’s desire for something to do.

Also on the way is the new Fugitive and consequence system. This entirely new feature in AoC offers several new dynamic layers of gameplay and mechanics that will excite casual and hardcore pvp’ers alike. The enthusiasm for the fugitive system was apparent on Erling’s face as he went into detail about players dropping loot upon death, becoming open to attack by everyone without the fear of their own fugitive levels increasing, and the e-cred of being a “badass” as Erling puts it.

When probed for more information on the content that Funcom was hard at work on we were able to coerce Erling into revealing exclusively to the Vault Network that “We [Funcom] are working on a dungeon called House of Crom – it looks really cool! But that’s all I’m going to say on that.” From the look on his face the House of Crom is definitely going to be worth checking out.

Last on the new list of features coming soon are the itemization improvements. Erling said that Funcom is aware of how confusing and bloated the +0.01 to a stat system is when looking at an item. Players can expect better looking weapons with a much more user friendly stat system in the game as Funcom’s itemization team works diligently to improve the game.

These fixes, additional features, and overall improvements will go a long way. Funcom has proven that they are, if anything, committed to Age of Conan.
